MAIN STREET Elizabeth City will be transformed into 10 half-court basketball courts on April 27, as the fifth annual Elizabeth City Jaycees three-on-three Basketball Tournament gets under way.
The double-elimination tournament begins at 9 a.m.
Organizers hope to attract 50 teams in six competition divisions to raise funds for the Jaycees and Friends of the Court.
A delayed entry deadline has been set for Thursday. The fee for a team, which consists of three players and a substitute, is $90.
All participants will receive a T-shirt and refreshments. Trophies will go to all players on the top two teams, and to the top three teams in each division.
Divisions include male ages 10-12, 13-15, 15-17, open 17-30, and over 30; and an open women's division.
``We hope to get 50 teams this year,'' said Cabe Speary, tournament director. ``Last year we had 46. That was the most we ever had.''
Three blocks of Main Street near the Pasquotank County Courthouse will be blocked off for the hoopsters.
``In the earlier rounds of the tournament, we will have 10 games going on at one time for the first couple of hours,'' Speary said.
Each game will be played to 15 points. All shots are one point.
Speary said that in the past, some of the competition in the open men's division has included players from Elizabeth City State University and Norfolk State University.
``We try to match them out so they are more even and there won't be many blowouts,'' Speary said.
``The tournament is sanctioned by the High School Athletic Directors Association so players won't lose their eligibility.'' MEMO: For more information about registration, call 331-4781 or 338-3691 after
