Antoine Whitted, one of nine candidates vying for three City Council seats, will not be on the ballot May 7.
Whitted was seven signatures short of the 125 registered voters he needed on a petition to allow him to be fully registered as a candidate, said Virginia W. Garrett, Chesapeake's voter registrar.
Garrett said Whitted submitted his candidate forms, including the petition, just minutes before the deadline March 8. There was no time for him to collect more valid signatures, Garrett said.
``You know, the law is the law,'' she said. ``We went over and back and sideways; we did everything we could to help him.''
Whitted, a 26-year-old automobile salesman, has waged a campaign despite the circumstances. He has participated along with officially registered candidates in public forums and in questionnaires from various city groups.
Voters who want to support Whitted will have to write his name on the ballot. by CNB
