DIGEST - BUSINESS

CONSUMER NEWS

Virginia Power warned that people falsely identifying themselves as utility employees are soliciting its customers for orders for so-called demand controllers, which regulate electricity use by shifting power demand to times when electric rates are lower. The utility said such controllers can be effective, but that customers should carefully select a contractor to install them and beware of false claims. It suggested customers contact the Better Business Bureau to see if there are outstanding claims against a contractor, and said it would supply customers with information that could help them decide whether installing a demand controller would save money.
