FOUR SHOT; ONE DIES

Three members of one family and an innocent bystander were shot during an argument with two men who fled late Saturday, police said.

The shooting, which occurred about 9 p.m. in the 1100 block of 27th St., left 21-year-old Victor Lewis dead and his brother, Lamont, 19, in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Riverside Regional Medical Center.

Their sister, Pamela, 16, was listed in stable condition at Sentara Hampton General Hospital, as was a neighbor, James King, 66.

Police spokeswoman Patricia L. Schlosser gave this account:

Just before 9 p.m., Pamela Lewis and another female arrived at the Lewis home in a taxi with two unidentified men. Lewis got out of the cab and went to speak with one of her brothers. The two men also got out of the cab.

Within moments, an argument broke out and men from the taxi pulled out guns and opened fire.

The spray of gunshots cut down the two Lewis brothers and their sister. King was felled in his driveway. Other bullets flew wildly, some lodging in cars parked along the street.

The taxi driver fled when the shooting began and the gunmen also ran off when they finished firing. The second woman, who had remained in the cab, took the wheel and drove about a block to the Chestnut police substation, where she ran off.

Police found Lamont Lewis, critically injured, inside the taxi. It was unclear if he fell in the cab or was placed there.

Police said little is know about the gunmen or what initiated the dispute. A handgun was recovered.
