LIFE JACKETS FOR KIDS: Coast Guard statistics show that more than 80 percent of boating fatalities involve people not wearing life jackets, and that many of those are children. The American Pediatrics Society lists drowning as the No. 1 cause of child death. Children younger than 7 cannot don a life vest by themselves. Those between 7 and 12 cannot do so without training. Before setting out for a day of boating, put children in properly fitted and adjusted life jackets.
