John Alton ``Tip'' Spivey, 81, died Tuesday, April 23, 1996, in Obici Hospital after a brief illness.
Mr. Spivey was a graduate of Windsor High School and Virginia Polytechnic and State University, Class of 1939. He taught agriculture at Stony Creek High School. During World War II, he served as a captain in the Coastal Artillery in the Aleutian Islands. He was post master in Windsor, Va., for 33 years. Mr. Spivey was a member of Colosse Baptist Church, where he served as moderator, deacon, Sunday school teacher and choir member. He was a past-president and the oldest active member of the Windsor Ruritan Club. He also was a past-president of the Virginia Post Masters Association and served on the Isle of Wight County Public Service Authority for 14 years as a secretary-treasurer and chairman during that period.
Mr. Spivey is survived by his wife of 55 years, Myrtle ``Ducky'' Spivey; daughter, Ann Spivey Carr and her husband, Delman Lew Carr of Suffolk; another daughter, Cynthia Spivey Albertelly and her husband, Bruce Albertelly of West Hartford, Conn.; granddaughter, Susannah Virginia Carr; two grandsons, Jonathan Edward Albertelly and Bryan William Albertelly; and a sister, Grace Spivey Howell of Windsor.
The graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at the Colosse Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Windsor Volunteer Rescue Squad or Colosse Baptist Church, Windsor, Va., 23487. Sidney F. Harrell Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
