Helen Pennington Spear, 72, of the second block of Chatham Road, died April 22, 1996, in her residence.
She was a native of Portsmouth and was predeceased by her parents, Louis and Ester Neathery Pennington. She was also predeceased by her husband, Allen Jacob Spear, and a grandchild, Michael Lee Garner. She was a member of Victory Boulevard Church of Christ.
She is survived by a daughter, Rita S. Garner of Fredericksburg, Va; two sons, Joseph C. Spear of Las Vegas, and Warren J. Spear of Portsmouth; two sisters, Marjorie Clinkscales of Star, S.C., and Janie Jones of Las Vegas; two brothers, Lewis Pennington of Moyock, N.C., and Charlie Pennington of Suffolk; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Boulevard Chapel, by the Rev. David Lubag. Burial is in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and other times at 5821 Brookmere Lane, Portsmouth.
