NORFOLK FIREFIGHTERS ENDORSE TWO CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATES

The membership of Norfolk Professional Firefighters, Local 68, has announced its endorsement of Charles D. Grant and William E. Swindell Jr. in the May 7 election for the Norfolk City Council's two superward seats.

In Superward 6, Grant is running against incumbent Mason C. Andrews, Fred G. Bashara and E. Toles Summers.

In Superward 7, Swindell is running against Daun S. Hester, Algie T. Howell Jr., Daniel E. Montague, H. Marks Richard and Horace T. ``Tommy'' White.

The Rev. Joseph N. Green Jr. is stepping down from his seat in Superward 7.

In supporting Grant, the firefighters' union pointed to Grant's ``years of service as a police officer and chief, his continued community service as a member and former vice president of the Northside Civic League, his work with the Crime Line program, the founding and continual support of the Norfolk Prayer Breakfast, and his founding of the Concerned Citizens Group of Norfolk.

He has worked tirelessly for the needs of police and firefighters in the city of Norfolk and promises to set up a board of neighborhood leaders to give him input on important city issues.''

In supporting Swindell, the union said his ``experience with the Lindenwood/Cottage Heights Civic League and the Inner City Federation of Civic Leagues gives him insight into the needs of the taxpayers of Norfolk. He also has expressed sympathy with the needs of Norfolk's firefighters and police officers.''
