A Portsmouth defense lawyer, who ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 1988, was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with rape and sodomy.
Sterling H. Weaver Sr., 47, was served with warrants at police headquarters and was released on a personal recognizance bond.
The alleged incident occurred on Monday at Weaver's office in downtown Portsmouth in the 600 block of Dinwiddie St.
A 35-year-old woman told police that she was raped and sodomized at the lawyer's office.
Weaver placed third in a four-candidate field in 1988, behind Gloria O. Webb and Thomas Perry. Stephen Strong finished last. In 1982, Weaver was unsuccessful in getting the Democratic nomination for the State Senate.
He would not comment on the charges Tuesday.
