Walter S. Lanier Sr., 57, a resident of Timberlawn Drive, passed away Monday April 22, 1996, at MCV Hospital in Richmond.
A native of Washington, D.C., Mr. Lanier was the son of the late Godfrey S. and Ruby Crumpler Lanier. He served in the U.S. Army and the National Guard. He was a retired deputy fire chief for Prince George's County, Md., and life member and former chief of the Tuxedo-Cheverly (Md.) Volunteer Fire Department. He received the PG County (Md.) Fire Chief's Honorary Award and was also named the PG County (Md.) Volunteer Fireman of the Year. He was a former president for the Local 1619 IAFF. He was president of the Wakefield Sportsmen's Club, a member of the Wakefield Community Hunt Club where he served as secretary and as a member of the Board of Directors. He was also a member of Wakefield Masonic Lodge (NU)198 A.F.&A.M. He was past president of the Wakefield Ruritan Club and received the Ruritan of the Year award in both 1988 and 1991. He was also named the Sussex and Surry Dispatch's Volunteer of the Year in 1988. He was a former member of the Board of Trustees for the Wakefield Foundation and served as a volunteer instructor for the Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries.
He is survived by his wife, Amber W. Lanier; two sons, Walter S. Lanier Jr. of Bowie, Md., Michael D. Lanier of Lanham, Md.; a daughter, Cathy Lynn Lanier of Greenbelt, Md.; a brother, Thomas N. Lanier of Slatey Fork, W.Va.; three sisters, Evelyn Gwinn of Richwood, W.Va., Durley Cotham of Artesia, N.M., Marian Harris of Brussels, Belgium; three grandssons, Christopher Ransom, Tony Hall, and Michael Kelly Lanier.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday by the Rev. Woodrow Laine at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield. Burial will be in Laine Family Cemetery in Wakefield. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
