JOHN C. BELL JR.

John Cartwright Bell Jr., a native of Windsor, N.C., died Tuesday April 23, 1996, at his home, ``Attara,'' in Roslyn. He was 81.

Owner of the Shibley Summer Day Camp and a familiar figure to generations of Long Island children, he joined his wife, Jeanne Shibley, after their marriage in 1949 in the operation of the camp, a business she had founded herself some years earlier. The camp has been in continuous operation ever since.

Mr. Bell was the son of the late John Cartwright Bell and Minnie Turner Bond. He attended North Carolina State University in Raleigh and was a veteran of World War II. After his wife's death in 1985, Mr. Bell spent his time, between travels, alternately in Roslyn, Windsor, and nearby Eden House on the Albemarle Sound. Known for his generosity, Mr. Bell, an Episcopalian, donated a Zimmer organ to St. Thomas' Episcopal Church in Windsor, in memory of his wife, son and grandson. He sponsored annual recitals at St. Thomas' by Dorothy Pappadakos, principal organist of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. Rachel Rosales, soprano with the New York City Opera, has performed with Ms. Pappadakos.

He was a member of the Creek Club, the North Hempstead Country Club, the Manhasset Bay Yacht Club on Long Island, as well as the Metropolitan Club and the Dancers Club in New York City.

He is survived by three brothers of Windsor, William Bell, Carter Bell and Holley Mack Bell; two sisters-in-law, Clara Bell and Wanda Bell; a grandson, Ernest Norris and his wife, Jane; two great-granddaughters, Kelly and Mackenzie of Sea Cliff, N.Y.; 14 nieces and nephews; and 16 great-nieces and nephews.

The funeral is scheduled today at Trinity Episcopal Church in Roslyn, with interment at Nassau Knolls Cemetery in Port Washington, N.Y. Miss Pappadakos will be organist and Miss Rosales will sing at the offertory.
