Southland forms partners with Portuguese company

Southland Industries Inc. in Chesapeake, North America's largest producer of cork and cork/rubber products, established a partnership with Megacork, a leading cork producer in Portugal. The agreement will provide reciprocal product sales, marketing and technical exchange between the two domestic and internationally-based manufacturing companies. This will allow Southland to offer its customers more products and to enter new markets throughout the world. The venture will also give the two companies the resources to compete internationally. (Staff) 360 Communications to buy cellular service

360 Communications has agreed to acquire some of Independent Cellular Network's operations for $517 million worth of stock and debt. Independent Cellular, operating under the brand WirelessOne Network, provides cellular service to more than 120,000 customers in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia. The privately held company will maintain its cellular service in Florida. 360 Communications said the purchase will boost its cellular presence in the Midwest and mid-Atlantic regions, adding 3.2 million potential customers. Following the purchase, 360 Communications will have 24.9 million potential customers. (Dow Jones News Service) Telemarketing company to open in Hampton

West Telemarketing Corp. confirmed that it may open a telemarketing center in Hampton. The Omaha, Neb.-based company is working out the details with the city. A deal could be completed next month. West, a privately-held company headed by Gary and Mary West, operates three subsidiaries - one in which telemarketing employees answer calls, one in which employees place calls and another that's called an interactive division. Hampton Mayor James L. Eason had said he expected to announce in the next three weeks that a large telemarketing company would create ``in excess of 500 jobs'' in the city.
