FIREFIGHTERS, FILIPINO GROUP ENDORSE VA. BEACH CANDIDATES

The local firefighters union and a Filipino civic group issued endorsements this week for the May 7 municipal elections.

The board of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 2924 endorsed Mayor Meyera E. Oberndorf, and council members Robert K. Dean and Linwood O. Branch III in their bids for re-election. The seven-member board, which represents 246 firefighters and officers, also endorsed candidate Robert C. Spadaccini Sr. for the at-large seat on the council.

The Filipino American Community Action Group of Hampton Roads, a 4,000-member organization, endorsed the following people for the Virginia Beach City Council: Oberndorf for mayor, council member Harold Heischober for the at-large seat, Dean for the Princess Anne seat, Branch for the Beach Borough seat and council member John A. Baum for the Blackwater Borough seat.

For the School Board, the group is supporting Donald Bennis for the two-year, at-large seat, Nancy Dahlman Guy for the Lynnhaven seat, H.L. Powell Jr. for the Princess Anne seat and Delceno C. Miles for the Blackwater seat. The group did not endorse anyone for the four-year at-large seats or the Beach Borough seat.

The firefighters board did not endorse any School Board candidates.
