An investigation into a shooting Wednesday night led police to an apparent suicide, police spokesman Larry Hill said.
At about 9 p.m., Gerard Smith, 25, was returning to his apartment in the 700 block of Guy Ave. Smith was in the stairwell outside his apartment when he was struck in the back by a bullet fired from a nearby apartment, Hill said.
Smith then went to the 7500 block of Tidewater Drive, where he flagged down a police car. He was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Police went to the apartment complex to investigate the shooting. When they entered the apartment where the shot was believed to have been fired, they found a man dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, Hill said.
Police did not release the dead man's name.
It was not clear whether the bullet that took the man's life was the same one that struck Smith, Hill said.
