BIKE PATH STRIPES COULD BE ERASED

If officials at this Outer Banks beach town don't want stripes down the center of their new bike path, state Department of Transportation workers will blacktop over those dotted yellow lines and wipe them out, state transportation board member R.V. Owens III said Thursday.

``I'm totally against the stripes. They're the craziest things I've ever seen,'' Owens said. ``If I get a resolution from the Kill Devil Hills board asking to take the stripes up, we'll take those stripes off.''

The mile-long, 10-foot-wide asphalt trail was dedicated Wednesday. It is the third such trail on the Outer Banks, the widest in the area and the only one with a yellow stripe down the center. Town Planning Director Greg Loy said the strip was painted at the state's suggestion as a safety standard.

Kill Devil Hills Mayor Duncan Wright said he doesn't like the striping either. by CNB
