ELIZABETH RIVER RUN IS SET FOR SATURDAY

Alarm clocks will sound and tired bodies will rise from bed Saturday morning. But instead of work or school, the task will be reaching the finish line of the 18th annual Elizabeth River Run.

About 2,000 runners are expected for the 10K race (6.1 miles), which begins at 9 a.m. at the Armed Forces Staff College and winds through Meadowbrook, Larchmont, Lamberts Point and Ghent before reaching Brambleton Avenue. The finish line is at Boush and Main streets.

Among the men's contenders are Mike Rinko and Mike Harrison - runners-up each of the last two years. Terrance Herrington, the two-time defending champion, had not registered as of Wednesday.

Herrington, who is training for the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, was not expected to compete last year. However, he competed and ran 31 seconds faster than the previous year.

In the women's division, Leslie Willis, Monica Allard, Kathleen McAllister-Morgan and the Elizabeth Andrews are expected to be the top contenders.

Cash bonuses of $250 will be awarded to runners establishing records in the men's open (28:31 by Steve Pinard, 1986); women's open (34:01 by Vickie Mitchell, 1993); men's master (30:07, Gary Romesser, 1991) and women's master (35:01 by Nancy Grayson, 1991).

In addition to the main event, there is the Little Lizzie run, a race intended to attract younger runners. The school with the most registered students in the Lizzie wins a computer. Second- and third-place schoolsget $500 and $250, respectively, in athletic equipment.

Registration is from noon to 6 p.m. today and 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Armed Forces Staff College. by CNB
