JOHN W. SMITH

John Wesley Smith, 86, of the 1100 block of Kempsville Road, died Thursday, April 25, 1996, in a Norfolk hospital.

He retired from J.W. Smith Farms after more than 50 years as a truck farmer, having farms in Virginia Beach, one of which is now where Virginia Wesleyan College is located. He also had farms in Suffolk, Mathews and Amherst County. He was born in Princess Anne County, Va., and was the son of the late William E. and Mary Elizabeth Frizzell Smith. He was preceded in death by his previous wives, Mildred Bliven Smith and Mary Cobb Smith. Mr. Smith was a member of Virginia Heights Baptist Church and attended Kempsville School. He also was a 50-year member of Ruth Masonic Lodge No. 89, Scottish Rite Bodies, and the Khedive Shrine Temple.

Survivors include his wife, Margarette R. Smith of Newport News; daughter, Charla Lee Baucom of Norfolk; son, William Bliven Smith of Kingsport, Tenn.; and three grandchildren, Susan Diane Huckaby of Virginia Beach, and Jared William Smith and Bryan Wesley Smith, both of Kingsport, Tenn.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Chapel of Virginia Wesleyan College. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will be at Cox Funeral Home today from 7 to 8 p.m. for visitation, or at 1188 Kempsville Road, at all other times. Contributions may be made to Virginia Wesleyan College.
