How would you like to bowl for $1 million?
Not against the pros. Not even against the higher average amateurs. Just plain Joe and Jane Blow bowlers.
The Lilac City Tenpin Tournament in Rochester, N.Y., offers such an opportunity and got under way this month. It will run through June 23.
It's handicap competition and annually - this is its 28th year - draws participants from as many as 30 states and Canada. Numerous Virginians compete.
The tournament has 18 events. It has men and women's singles and doubles, mixed doubles, several team categories and divisions for seniors. It also has the sanction of ABC and WIBC.
The Lilac tourney is billed as the second-largest commercial tournament in the nation. Last year, more than 20,000 competed.
The tournament is held in two centers, the 56-lane Terrace Garden Lanes and the 80-lane Olympic Bowl, in Rochester.
The prizes are based on entries, but 9,500 bowlers took home money last year. The individual leader pocketed $24,000. The winning team prize was $40,000.
John Winter was the $24,000 winner in men's singles. He had a handicap series of 827.
Interested in competing? Call 1-716-464-8288 or 1-800-365-4522.
Marcel Fournier, who helped organize the Lilac at its outset, says doubles and team entries will be accepted until May 8 and singles and mixed events will be open throughout the tournament.
Adds Fournier: ``And we also are starting to take reservations for the 1997 Lilac.''
