As they have for 17 years, the Portsmouth Music Study Club will celebrate spring and National Music Week with Music for an Olde Towne Afternoon on May 5.
The annual event features mini-concerts in three historic gardens with the audience traveling on foot from one place to another.
Three mini-concerts between 2 and 5 p.m. this year will feature the following performers:
Sherry Hatfield of Norfolk, a soprano, will sing a variety of show tunes by Jerome Kern, Oscar Hammerstein and others. She will be accompanied by Elly Stoughton at the piano. They will perform in the garden of the Hill House, 221 North St.
Mario Bensen, a native of the Philippines who lives in Portsmouth, is a tenor and a guitarist and directs the Marathon Choir at St. Andrew Lutheran Church. He will be joined by Jim Liedmann, cornetist, for a new composition by Bensen. They will perform in the garden of Mr. and Mrs. William A. Leitner, 215 Glasgow St.
The Jubilee Brass Band, an all-city Chesapeake jazz band under the direction of John Chenault, includes 18 musicians chosen by audition. The repertoire includes music by Count Basie, Louis Prima, Neal Hefti and other popular musicians. They will play at the Glasgow Street Park between Dinwiddie and Court streets.
Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students and may be purchased at any of the three concert locations prior to the concerts or in advance by calling 393-2691.
In case of rain, all three programs will be presented at Monumental United Methodist Church, Queen and Dinwiddie streets. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
