Melvin's Flea Circus, an acoustical two-man band, will play at 7 p.m. Sunday at Potrafka Gallery, 600 Washington St.
The show combines the talents of Corky Spencer and Melvin Jordan.
Spencer is a tenor, guitarist, keyboardist and songwriter. Born and raised in Memphis, Tenn., he moved to Virginia in 1992, bringing with him the influence of the Memphis Sound of jazz and blues.
Jordan, a native of Norfolk, is a percussionist, harmonica player and vocalist. Since he attended his first Grateful Dead concert in 1983, he has seen more than 100 concerts. But he says he has a passion for the upbeat sound of reggae, the style that lends itself to Spencer's original compositions.
The duo performs much of Spencer's work, but their program also includes their interpretations of songs by Bob Dylan, Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell, Shawn Colvin, James Taylor, Jimmy Buffet and others.
The concert is the second of a Sunday night series planned by gallery owner Wayne Potrafka.
Admission is $5 at the door. For more information, call 399-4774. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
