Collection of Edgar T. Brown
The scene on Atlantic Avenue at 24th Street looking south in 1950
was a lot different than the view is today. In 1950, the Albermarle
Hall (on the left) run by the J. Stanley Smith family was still
standing next to Marilyn's Inn, operated by the Strohkorb family.
Across Atlantic Avenue was Atlantic grocery, which started in 1945
and was owned by H.W. Simmons, George S. Brown, Frank L. Fentress
and A.S. Holloman, who later became part of the Be-Lo chain. Mary's
Lunch, in the foreground on the right, was operated by Mary and
Harry Katsias. Last Sunday's Through the Years featured Grumpy's, a
local watering hole at the corner of 9th Street and Atlantic Avenue.
The item left out part of Grumpy's history. The spot was owned and
operated by Delbert Skaggs from 1970 until the mid-'80s when it was
torn down.
