Lathan Van Umphlett Sr., 91, of 1201 Park Drive, died at Albemarle Hospital, Saturday April 27, 1996.
Born in Perquimans County, N.C., he retired from the Daily Advance after 58 years, having worked as foreman in the printing shop, and was a member of B.P.O. Elks (NU)856 and First United Methodist Church. Mr. Umphlett was the son of late Charlie W. and Nettie Haskett Umphlett and widower of Emma ``Boots'' Booth Barclift Umphlett.
He is survived by a son, Lathan Van Umphlett Jr. and wife Carolyn B. Umphlett of Virginia Beach; a sister, Nell Ferebee of Elizabeth City; one granddaughter, Sylvia U. Betz of Virginia Beach and three great-grandchildren of Hillsville, Va. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Gayle U. Harvey.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday in Twiford's Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Bill Ruth officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, South Road Street, Elizabeth City.
