A driver who apparently ignored a stop sign was killed Friday afternoon when another car hit his broadside.
State police on Saturday identified the victim as Joshua C. Smith, 19, of Windsor. His brother, Jeremiah S. Smith, 18, was seriously injured and was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital by the Nightingale helicopter ambulance.
A back-seat passenger, Larry M. Rawls, 17, was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center, in Newport News, with minor injuries.
State police said the accident occurred about 1:45 p.m. at the intersection of Virginia Routes 652 and 644. Joshua Smith was driving north on 644 when he passed the stop sign. His 1985 Chevrolet Chevette was struck broadside by a 1983 Ford Ranger.
Two people in the Ranger - driver Larry D. Hawks, 30, of Smithfield and passenger Darren E. Patty, 33, of Franklin - also were taken to Riverside for treatment of minor injuries.
State police said no one wore a seat belt.
No charges were filed.
