A regional Baptist ministers group on Monday endorsed candidates in three local elections, including James Holley Sr. for mayor of Portsmouth.
The Rev. Anthony Paige said the Tidewater Metro Baptist Ministers Conference made the following endorsements in City Council races: in Norfolk, Mason C. Andrews in Ward 6 and Daun S. Hester in Ward 7; in Portsmouth, Holley for mayor, and Bernard Griffin and Lee King for council; in Chesapeake, William E. Ward for mayor, and Dwight Parker, Elizabeth Thornton and Edward Hall Jr. for council.
In School Board elections, Paige said, the group endorsed: Elizabeth Daniels in Portsmouth, and James J. Wheaton, Allen H. Goode Jr. and Thomas L. Mercer Sr. in Chesapeake.
The conference represents ministers in 125 area Baptist churches.
