A 39-year-old Suffolk man was killed Monday afternoon when his 1986 Ford Ranger was struck head-on by an out-of-control pickup truck.
David W. Baines was traveling north on U.S. Route 258 when the accident occurred just west of State Route 609 at about 4:10 p.m. Baines was pronounced dead at the scene.
Tammy Van Dame, spokeswoman for the Virginia State Police, said Baines' vehicle was struck by an Isuzu pickup that was traveling southbound. The truck ran off the right side of the road and then swerved into the northbound lanes.
The driver of the Isuzu pickup was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle. Van Dame did not identify the driver, but said she was taken to Obici Hospital in Suffolk and then taken by air ambulance to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Van Dame said an investigation into the accident is continuing and that charges against the driver of the Isuzu are possible.
The section of U.S. Route 258 where the accident occurred was closed for a short time after the accident.
