The Northeastern High School Athletic Booster Club asked the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank School Board on Monday to support a proposed project to place lights on the school's athletic fields.
The total cost of erecting lights, creating extra parking, concessions and installing restrooms would be about $120,000, said Sandy Davis of the booster club.
The club is raising the funds but also asked for financial support from the board.
``We're looking at a project that not only would benefit the school system, but the community as well,'' Davis said.
Board members said they supported the idea of the project but wanted more information and assurance that procedures are followed during the project.
Also Monday night, the School Board put out for review a policy and regulations for conducting standardized testing in the district. Board member Pat McDowell said the policy would be important under the state's new education system, which judges schools and teachers by how students perform on standardized tests.
Nearly 100 seventh grade writing tests from the middle school had to be discounted earlier this year because one teacher gave students clues about the test question a day before the exam.
Superintendent Joe Peel said the district had been working on the policy before that incident. But he added that the policy would make similar situations easier to deal with in the future.
``I think this is a strong statement that people need to be mindful of what is ethical and what is proper,'' Peel said. by CNB
