LETTERS TO THE EDITOR - ISLE OF WIGHT

Thanks for the help

How do you begin to say thank-you to hundreds of people who extended their hands in an effort to bring a dream into reality? The Friends of the Carrollton Library want our community to know how many reached out to help our recent fund-raising auction.

There were donors from Carrollton, Smithfield, Suffolk, Newport News, Hampton, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Norfolk, Williamsburg, West Virginia and even New Jersey. Space does not permit a list of all the persons involved.

Items were stuffed into a building kindly provided by W.C. Sawyer until the day of the sale. Then, on auction day, Jim Abicht worked his magic on the assembled crowd for 4 1/2 hours. The end result was a net of more than $9,000 for the new library building fund.

Our grateful thanks go to the folks who came out to bid and who carried home some great bargains. We are most appreciative of those individuals who donated items, especially the business folk of the area who provided merchandise and gift certificates. Thanks also to the wonderful bakers who provided goods for the bake sale.

Carrollton In support of MacManus

The residents of Smithfield will be well served when Richard MacManus is elected to serve on the town council.

I served with Richard when he was president of the Hardy Elementary School PTA and founding president of the Christian Outreach Program.

As president of Christian Outreach, he helped to unite 25 area churches into the dynamic group it is today. He demonstrated his ability as a real consensus builder, in bringing this group together and keeping the group focused on the most pressing needs. He is still very active in Christian Outreach.

When he was president of the Hardy PTA, he suggested, planned and led a group of parents to build a physical fitness area in the rear of the school. At the same time, another group of parents and students were cleaning the flower beds and painting the metal playground equipment.

Richard is extremely bright and, with his engineering background, he will be a great help in solving the problems of a fast-growing town. His gift of being a consensus builder will make him a valued representative.
