ART STUDENTS DISPLAY THEIR WORK AT MALL

Art students from Virginia Beach public schools have their ``masterpieces'' displayed at Pembroke Mall through May 12 during the citywide Student Art Celebrations.

Every school is represented and thousands of pieces of artwork are on exhibit during the next two weeks - mixed media, sculpture, watercolors, papier mache and even T-shirt art.

Art teachers throughout the city selected the works that represented concepts, skills and techniques that were taught in art classes during the year.

Secondary school art is on display throughout the mall through Saturday, and elementary art goes on exhibit Sunday and continues through May 12.

An awards ceremony for the secondary level show will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in center court at Pembroke.

Local judges Sharon Hill, Norfolk Schools art supervisor; Betsey DiJulia, education director for the Virginia Beach Center for the Arts; and Steve Carpenter, professor of art education at Old Dominion University, will award ribbons and prize money.

A reception for the elementary artists will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. May 9 in the Visions Gallery, and on May 11 elementary students will demonstrate various art techniques through the Artists-In-Action program. The public is invited to participate and should contact Ann-Marie Fowler at Rosemont Elementary for more information.

Stan Streit, owner of The Frame-Up Gallery, will host the first annual Teacher Art Exhibition Friday through May 9 at 4878 Princess Anne Road, where teachers' art work will be on display and for sale.

According to Anne Wolcott, fine arts coordinator for city schools, the recent budget crunch has cut funding for such ventures and the citywide show could not be held without sponsors. They not only provided a venue for the show, but donated money to buy such items as awards, ribbons, posters, certificates and other materials.

``The equipment we are using is 10 years old and there are no funds to purchase new equipment,'' she said. ``Any volunteers from the community will be greatly appreciated.''

The community has risen to the occasion by helping out this year, Wolcott added.

The Pembroke Mall show is being sponsored by the law firm of Broudy and Broudy, Pembroke Mall, The Hermitage Foundation and Pottery Art Studio. MEMO: Here is the schedule for the Student Art Celebrations at Pembroke Mall:
