The prophecy of Beach District coaches called for the eventual champion to suffer at least one loss.
Kellam turned out to be the messenger Tuesday in the rain when the Knights handed defending champ First Colonial its first league loss of the season, 1-0.
The loss broke First Colonial's streak of 14 district games without a defeat.
The third-ranked Knights now hold a half-game lead over the top-ranked Patriots. No. 2 Kempsville has one loss, but was rained out Tuesday. Cox and Salem each moved to 4-2 with victories.
``This was very big,'' said Kellam coach Don Hart, whose team moved to 6-1 in the Beach and 10-2-1 overall. First Colonial is now 5-1 and 10-2.
``This makes our home game (a season finale May 10) against Kempsville even bigger.''
Jay Gunia provided the winner, scoring on a set indirect kick play two yards inside the penalty box. The lead official had ruled that Peter Anderson was held on a breakaway inside the penalty area with nine minutes left in the game.
``It's all part of the game,'' First Colonial coach Joe Tucei said. ``And they finished their opportunity.''
Jason Bonnet started the play, tapping the ball to Ed Stockunas, who used a heel kick to pass the ball backwards to Gunia, who was charging from the rear.
``This game was pretty even, but I think we had the edge a little bit,'' Gunia said. ``I called the play and I saw the net and put it in.''
The shot was a blast that grazed off the outstretched hand of Patriots keeper Corey Fogle.
``I saw it coming,'' said Fogle, who had seven saves. ``It just slipped off my fingertips and into the net.'' by CNB
