LETTERS TO THE EDITOR - NORFOLK

In support of Grant

Regarding the race for the Superward 6 Norfolk City Council seat, the incumbent boasts that he has worked hard to bring a ``five-star shopping experience (the MacArthur Center)'' to Norfolk.

Ever wonder why he hasn't worked hard to bring ``five-star'' city services and schools to the city?

Let's make a change on May 7. Vote for ``Chief'' Charlie Grant for Superward 6.

Clarence A. Shields

East Ocean View Avenue In support of Andrews

It is with great pleasure that I add my voice to those citizens who have endorsed Mason Andrews for another term on City Council.

In these times of change and even turmoil, Norfolk needs the wisdom, experience and integrity that Dr. Andrews has displayed during his time on council.

As a former chairman of the Norfolk Republican Party, it is my hope that Norfolkians of all political persuasions can come together for the good of our city. We need to put aside partisan considerations. A non-partisan council has served us well.

Dr. Andrews follows in the same tradition as two other extraordinary leaders, Roy Martin and Vince Thomas. We need men of that caliber at the helm.

Vote for Mason Andrews on May 7.

Mary A. Grigg

Hampton Boulevard

On May 7 the registered voters in Norfolk will have the opportunity to return to City Council for another term one of its most dedicated and successful citizens. Mason Andrews has served his city in many capacities and always with the central aim of the betterment of the city as a whole. A short list of his work to accomplish his vision for the city includes:

(1) His leadership in making Norfolk a nationally known medical center, which has become an economic engine for the entire region.

(2) His tireless and persistent efforts to make the city an attractive place to live. He has worked to restore all the residential neighborhoods of the city, including Ocean View, the greater Ghent area and the downtown business district. No one can rightly claim that Norfolk has not undergone major improvement during the years that Dr. Andrews has served on council and as mayor, or that his efforts were not crucial in effecting these positive changes.

(3) He is a rare person who not only knows the price of the projects that he supports but also knows the value of projects that at first glance may not, in and of themselves, make money. He has supported many activities that have a positive effect on the quality of life in the area and, as a result, make Norfolk a desirable place for businesses to locate. Some of the activities he has vigorously supported are: (a) the schools and universities located in Norfolk; (b) the arts groups, including the museum, the symphony, public radio and TV.

A vote for Mason Andrews is a vote for the continued improvement of our city and for honest, effective government.
