Fine arts center needed
As the producer of The Actors' Theatre, I am writing to tell you about the wonderful response and cooperation we received in bringing our production of ``Nunsense'' to your city. The assistance from the Fine Arts Commission in the form of a grant, encouragement and publicity make it all possible. The Oscar F. Smith High School Little Theater was a perfect location, and it was a pleasure to present our comedy there.
This is where we have recently encountered a problem. With such an excellent public response, we were prepared to serve the citizens of Chesapeake again by bringing our latest show, ``The Miser,'' to Oscar Smith in May. Unfortunately, this lovely theater was fully booked, and so we are unable to present that show to your citizens for their enjoyment and entertainment.
Because of this situation, I fully support the concept for a facility in Chesapeake that will have a theater, art gallery, classrooms, etc. This public building would be a wonderful addition for the quality of life for all of your delightful Chesapeake families. On behalf of The Actors' Theatre, we hope that the day will come when this dream will become a reality.

Lighting the path
Virginia BeachI would like to applaud publicly the work of the volunteer citizen panel for first-time juvenile offenders in Chesapeake. This organization not only enforces the firm, appropriate judgment needed for these youths, but it also provides for a second chance and a ``clean slate.'' Many of the youths who have succeeded with this program would probably not have fared so well in the juvenile court system.
As a young Christian, I am becoming increasingly aware of the downward spiral that our nation, especially our justice system, seems to be taking. However, despite the frequent discouragements, it is uplifting to see small steps being taken to straighten the pathway of this great country of ours.
These people who sacrifice their time and effort to serve the community epitomize the love, devotion and mercy that Christ has, and that we all should have, towards our fellow man. Although they may sometimes see their work as insignificant and futile, they are a lighthouse for many, as they light a new path for these youths and their families and shine encouragement down upon the disheartened citizens of this nation.

Betting parlor bill
I have had many conversations on the phone and in person with state Sen. Mark L. Earley. I believe that he has the best interest at heart of all the people of Chesapeake and the Commonwealth of Virginia. He is truly a dedicated servant of the people.
I appreciate all of his efforts in trying to help keep minors out of the off-track betting office in Chesapeake, Colonial Downs. I strongly believe that he will pursue this issue in the next session of the General Assembly.
I appreciate his efforts very much.
