Oliver Wendell Sawyer Sr., 86, of the 400 block of Forest Road, died Wednesday May 1, 1996, in a Chesapeake nursing home.
Mr. Sawyer was born in Camden County, N.C., and was the son of the late Oscar M. and Florence Sawyer Sawyer. He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Minnie Coline Hood Sawyer, and his second wife, Eunice Whedbee Sawyer. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.
Survivors include his son, Wendell Sawyer Jr. of Chesapeake; his sister, Marie Henry of Alexandria, Va.; two grandsons, David W. Sawyer and Mark O. Sawyer, both of Chesapeake; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens by Dr. Ray D. Fulayter. The family will receive friends at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, today from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Chesapeake CARE Free Clinic, 1001 Sparrow Road, Chesapeake, Va. 23325.
