WILLIAM I. MCKENDREE

William Ira McKendree, 77, of the 7400 block of North Shore Road, died on Wednesday night, May 1, 1996, in his Norfolk residence. He was the founder and retired president of W.I. McKendree and Co., Inc. He was born in Richmond, Va., and was the son of the late John Walker and Ann Lee Harding McKendree.

Mr. McKendree was a charter member of the Suburban Christian Church in Virginia Beach, a member of the Thomas N. Davis Masonic Lodge No. 351 of Richmond, a 20-year-member of the Kiwanis Club of Downtown Norfolk, past president of the Norfolk-Virginia Beach Executives Club and the Norfolk City Wide P.T.A. He was a founding member of the Tidewater Toastmasters and the Tidewater Academy, which was later known as the Douglas MacArthur Academy, for which he served as president of their Foundation from 1961-69. Mr. McKendree was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and was the organizer and founding member of the Douglas MacArthur Post 392 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was the past president of the Norfolk City Electoral Board, a member of the Republican Inner Circle, the Navy League, and Norfolk Yacht and Country Club.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Lois Wheeler McKendree; two sons, John Charles McKendree and his wife, Barbara and William Walker McKendree and his wife, Mary, all of Norfolk; a sister, Virginia Ann McKendree of Richmond; a brother, Vernon Walker McKendree of Glen Allen, Va.; and four grandchildren, John Charles McKendree Jr., Carolyn Elinor McKendree, Marisa Ann McKendree, and William Conrad McKendree, all of Norfolk.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in Suburban Christian Church in Virginia Beach by the Rev. James A. Meads. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will be at Cox Funeral Home today from 7 to 8 p.m. for visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to the Scholarship Fund of Suburban Christian Church, 5132 Bellamy Manor Drive, Virginia Beach, 23464, or to the American Cancer Society.
