FIVE SEEK 3 SEATS

Five Democrats will vie for three at-large seats on the Tyrrell County Board of Commissioners in Tuesday's primary elections.

The top three vote-getters will go on the ballot in November to run against Republican candidate Durwood M. Cooper Jr., who is unopposed in his party.

Each seat on the five-member board carries a four-year term.

Ray McClees and Gordon A. Deaver Jr. are the two incumbent commissioners seeking re-election.

Newcomers are William A. ``Billy'' Oakes and Zack Brickhouse, both of Columbia, and Margaret Ann ``Peggy'' Griffin of Columbia.

Tyrrell County has 2,212 registered voters: 1,915 Democrats, 220 Republicans and 77 others, Board of Elections Director Annette Reynolds said Thursday. by CNB
