Joseph Arnold Bright, 65, of the 4200 block of Derby Wharf Drive, died May 2, 1996, in a Norfolk hospital.
He was a native of Portsmouth and was a retired district counselor for The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star newspapers. He had also retired from the Virginia National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve with the rank of sergeant major.
He was a member of Kempsville Masonic Lodge (NU)196, A.F. & A.M., Norfolk Scottish Rite Bodies, Khedive Temple of the Shrine, A.A.O.N.M.S., and a member of the Khedive Temple Marching Band. He was a charter member and past president of the Thalia Lions Club and a member of Princess Anne Ruritan Club.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Rew Bright; his daughter and son-in-law, Cheri and Jeff Hainer; his son, Mark A. Bright; a sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Lyman Barnes, all of Virginia Beach; and four grandchildren.
A graveside service with Masonic rites and military honors will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in Colonial Grove Memorial Park, Virginia Beach. The family will receive friends at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, Virginia Beach, Sunday from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made to the Shriners' Crippled and Burned Children's Hospitals, c/o Khedive Temple, 645 Woodlake Drive, Chesapeake, Va. 23320.
