Motorists traveling on U.S. 158 between Currituck County and Dare County soon will have a faster and more convenient drive.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation on Friday announced that all four lanes of the Wright Memorial Bridge on U.S. 158 over the Currituck Sound will be opened Monday, weather permitting.
Coastal Gunite Construction Co. is the contractor for the $1.3 million project to rehabilitate the two eastbound lanes of the bridge. That span has been closed for repairs since September of 1995.
In May of 1995, an expansion span was completed parallel to the old bridge, opening two new lanes to motorists. Westbound traffic was placed on the expansion section and eastbound traffic remained on the original section of the bridge.
Since September, all traffic has been directed to the expansion span, with one lane in each direction, while the old section was rehabilitated.
