The Chesapeake Kiwanis Club's annual Shrimp Festival, now in its 15th year, is the traditional kick-off party for Jubilee.
Tickets are on sale now for this year's festival, which will take place from 4:30 to 7 p.m. May 14 at Chesapeake City Park. An all-you-can-eat dinner of spiced shrimp, North Carolina barbecue, baked beans, coleslaw, hush puppies, soft drinks and beer, plus continuous entertainment, costs $20 in advance or $25 at the gate.
All proceeds go to the club's community service projects. Last year, the Kiwanians donated $17,000 to projects at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School, Chesapeake Youth Services, the Chesapeake Jail Ministry, 4-H Clubs, Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, Adopt-a-Highway, Hope House Foundation, the Chesapeake Cares free clinic, Adopt-a-School, high school Key Clubs and scholarships to high school seniors.
W. Berkley Gibbs, co-chairman of the event, said the festival is a major fund-raiser for the club. ``In the past, it has really helped the club accomplish its missions and goals in this community,'' he said.
The Chesapeake Kiwanis Club has about 50 members. It meets at 7 a.m. each Wednesday at Piccadilly Cafeteria in Greenbrier Mall.
