SIDNEY S. CHELLIS

Capt. Sidney S. Chellis, 57, a Newport News native and Peninsula resident most of his life, died Friday, May 3, 1996.

Capt. Chellis retired from the city of Hampton's Division of Fire and Rescue in 1991 after 20 years of service. He was a member of IAFF Local No. 2450 and the Fellowship Baptist Church.

Capt. Chellis is survived by his wife, Sylvia I. Chellis; daughter, Marcella Bonham of Windsor; two sons, Sidney S. Chellis Jr. and Wayne S. Chellis, both of Windsor; two stepsons, Daymond Turner of Norfolk, and Kenny Turner of South Carolina; sister, Lois Chellis Cargil of Newport News; brother, Jimmy Chellis of Gloucester; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 Monday evening at the funeral home. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Peninsula Funeral Home by the Rev. Arnold G. Cooper and the Rev. Dan Gray. Burial with Fire Department honors will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Following the graveside service, the family will be at the home of Lois Cargil.
