It's not an invasion - not a real one, anyway. But part of a
combined British-American naval armada of 53,800 military personnel
was at work off the Virginia coast Saturday. Combined Joint Task
Force Exercise '96, the largest maritime exercise since the Persian
Gulf War, includes many support vessels like this one. About 26 U.S.
vessels are involved in the monthlong maneuvers, spearheaded by the
Norfolk-based carrier Enterprise and helicopter and troop carrier
Saipan. The 30-ship British task force is led by the carrier
Illustrious and the helicopter and troop carrier Fearless. More than
270 aircraft and 5,000 air force personnel from both nations are
participating.
