CHARGE RESIDENTS FOR CURBSIDE RECYCLING

In its ``infinite wisdom'' Virginia Beach City Council has decided to quit curbside recycling by the Southeastern Public Service Authority in favor of a ``do-it-yourself'' drop-off program.

This, according to the ``pundits,'' will save $775,000. If money is the issue, then think of the ``savings'' to taxpayers if the City Council decided to do away with the school-busing program in favor of a do-it yourself plan, where mamas could drop their own kids off at school!

Both of these plans are counterproductive to our desire to improve our standard of living for ourselves and our children.

It costs me about $40 every two months to get $7.30 worth of water (300 cubic feet). My water bill is enhanced by: service availability, $7, utility tax, $3 and sanitary sewer service $23. This does not include an annual $32.88 ``storm management service.'' It would not be too much of a burden to any of us if there was one more line added to our ``water'' bill titled: waste and recycling service $10 (that's $60 a year) for a much-needed service. (Note: $10 may be too high.)

No matter how many new drop-off centers are added, people will probably dispose of their recyclables as I plan to do: in the large, black container that sits where the little blue container used to be - and I will have saved 17 cents a day!
