BIG STRIPERS ARE BITING, BUT AWARD-WINNERS REMAIN ALOOF

While a few big striped bass have been pulled from Virginia waters since the ``trophy-fish'' season opened May 1, none has been reported that met the 40-pound or 44-inch minimum for citation awards from the Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament.

The biggest reported fish was a 38-inch catch by Louise Daigle of Virginia Beach. She was at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel on the boat F-Troop. Only stripers of 32 inches are more are legal during this special season, which runs through May 15.

Meanwhile, some anglers scored outstanding catches in the past few days. Included was Timothy Ramsey of Chesapeake, who pulled an 8-pound, 12-ounce largemouth bass from Cooper's Ditch, a canal draining the Dismal Swamp.

Red drum made strong showings on the North Carolina Outer Banks and at Magothy Bay on the Eastern Shore, while at least three rare spearfish were released off the Outer Banks.

One of the week's most impressive hauls was a 100-pound yellowfin tuna taken off Oregon Inlet, south of Nags Head, by Lucious Walker of Chesterfield, Va., on the charter boat Fight-N-Lady.
