SUBMARINE VETS CEREMONY: The U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II will hold their 23rd annual memorial service at 11 a.m. May 24 at the USS Shark II Memorial at Building CEP-166 of the Submarine Training Facility adjacent to Gate 5 of the Norfolk Naval Station. Vice Adm. George S. Emery, commander of Atlantic Fleet Submarine Force, will be the guest speaker.
TIDES HOST ARMED FORCES: Saturday night's Norfolk Tides/Syracuse Chiefs baseball gamewill salute the armed forces. Gates will open for the pre-game show at 6 p.m.; the game is at 7:15 p.m. A special ticket price, $4.50, is available to all active-duty members and their families.
WWII-STYLE DINNER DANCE: The Old Dominion Squadron, Confederate Air Force, will present a Hangar Door Canteen dinner dance at 6:30 p.m. June 15 at Hampton Roads Airport, Route 58, in Chesapeake. A World War II encampment will include tents, military vehicles and period military aircraft. The display opens to the public at 10 a.m. Admission is $2 for adults, $1 children. NEW MARINE RESERVE CENTER: Marine Air Control Squadron 24 received a new training center and commanding officer recently. The center, on South Birdneck Road, was dedicated in memory of Cpl. Lewis K. Bausell, a World War II Marine who received the Congressional Medal of Honor. Lt. Col. A. J. Athens relieved Lt. Col. G. E. Webb as commanding officer.

COMINGS AND GOINGS
RETURNING:
The guided missile cruiser Monterey, formerly from Mayport, Fla., arrives at its new homeport in Norfolk Friday. It is commanded by Capt. Robert M. Hartling and has a crew of 37 officers and 353 enlisted.
The guided missile frigate Simpson is scheduled to return home at 9:30 a.m. today, docking at Pier 5 of the Norfolk Naval Station, following six months with NATO's Standing Naval Force Atlantic. It is commanded by Cmdr. Douglas A. Block and has a crew of 198.
DEPARTING:
The oiler Platte left Norfolk Friday for a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean. Commanded by Cmdr. Robert S. Warner, the Platte has a crew of 16 officers and 214 enlisted.
The guided missile destroyer Laboon left Norfolk Friday for a six-month deployment to the Middle East Task Force. The Laboon will be commanded by Cmdr. Douglas D. McDonald. It sails with a crew of 25 officers and 315 enlisted.
CHANGE OF COMMAND
Capt. John N. Petrie relieves Cmdr. Tonya J. Concannon as commanding officer of the Norfolk Naval Station today. Petrie arrives from Washington, where he was executive assistant to the deputy chief of naval operations for plans, policy and operations. Concannon, interim base commander, returns to duties as the base executive officer.
Capt. Gerald Talbot Jr. relieves Capt. James Holloway as commander of Submarine Squadron 8. Holloway's new duty station has not been announced. Talbot's last assignment was as deputy secretary for the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington.
PROMOTIONS
Capt. Peter W. Marshall, Navy Civil Engineer Corps, has been selected for promotion to rear admiral. Marshall is commander of the 22nd Naval Construction Regiment and Deputy Commander of the 2nd Naval Construction Brigade based at the Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base. by CNB
