IS NOTHING SACRED?

Regarding the notification that Virginia Beach public schools will be open on Memorial Day, May 27, 1996: How can this be? Do we not teach our children that Memorial Day is a day that we honor the men and women who have served our country so unselfishly? Are there any patriotic members on the School Board, or are we all so self-absorbed in our own petty lives that we just don't feel like taking a stand?

I know how many school days we have lost to the snow and ice. But there are alternative ways to reschedule the lost time. Students could attend another Saturday, extend the school day for 15 minutes, go one more day at the end of the year.

I will not be sending my children to school on Memorial Day. I choose to teach my children that when their daddy goes out to sea for six months, it is for our country, their country and your country. Let us not forget the military men and women who did not come back. It is for them that Memorial Day is just that - a memory.
