Rain may have washed out the final day of play in the Southeastern District boys tennis tournament, but the headline ``Great Bridge wins doubles'' will apply no matter when it resumes.
Great Bridge's No. 2 team, Chris Adkins and Chip Howard, will meet its No. 1 duo, David Bristow and Mike Montalvo, in the championship match at 4 p.m. today at Oscar Smith, weather permitting.
On Monday, Bristow capped a dominating singles tournament run with a 6-0, 6-0 final-round victory over Churchland's Nathan Peszko.
Bristow, who reached the district tournament semifinals as a freshman and placed second last year, dropped just three games in five tournament matches.
Both players qualify for the Eastern Region singles tournament May 20-21 at Owl Creek Municipal Tennis Center and First Colonial. Bristow will play the Eastern District runner-up; Peszko will meet the Eastern champion.
Both Great Bridge doubles teams have also qualified for the regionals, where they will face Beach District teams in the first round.
Other district tournament action on tap this week:
The Beach District tournament, also washed out Tuesday, resumes at 9 a.m. today at First Colonial with the A-bracket quarterfinals, two rounds of doubles and the B-bracket first round. Play is tentatively scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. Friday at Owl Creek, but alterations to the schedule could be made at a coaches' meeting at 8:30 a.m. today.
Cox's Ryan Davidson is the top seed in the A division, followed by 1995 finalist Ramel Bautista of Tallwood and Cox's Nathan Shanks. Seedings are normally reserved for each team's top player, but the coaches, recognizing the strength of the Falcons this year, agreed to alter the format this year.
The Eastern District tournament begins at 3 p.m. today at Old Dominion and concludes at noon Thursday at Maury. The Commodores' Ross Hoffman is the top seed, followed by Lake Taylor's Jeremiah Murden, Norview's Tim Vango and Granby's Matthew Hartnett. Maury traditionally finishes 1-2 in this tournament, and the Commodores' Rob Brown actually beat Hoffman in a challenge match at midseason.
Norfolk Collegiate (girls) and Norfolk Academy (boys) will be the favorites when the TCIS tournaments get under way Thursday. Girls action will begin at 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Old Dominion; boys play commences at 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Nansemond-Suffolk and Lake Meade Landing Tennis Complex. Saturday, both the boys and the girls will play at ODU, marking the first time the two tournaments have concluded at the same site. by CNB
