Old Dominion women's basketball coach Wendy Larry is not seeking the head coaching job at the University of Washington, she said Tuesday.
``I am not a candidate for the Washington position,'' Larry said. ``I am absolutely flattered by the attention, but I did not formally apply for the position.''
Larry was back in Norfolk one day after attending the Basketball Hall of Fame induction ceremonies for Nancy Lieberman-Cline in Springfield, Mass. She had no comment on a reported trip to Seattle last week to interview for the coaching job vacated by Chris Gobrecht.
Washington sports information director Jim Daves said Larry spoke with school officials Monday night and said she was not interested in the job.
Daves said Washington initiated the contact and Larry ``went through the interview process,'' following Huskies assistants Kathy Anderson and Sunny Smallwood and Boise State coach June Daugherty.
``She was here and interviewed,'' Daves said.
Larry is coming off her best season in nine years with the Lady Monarchs, who were 29-3. For the second consecutive year, Larry received Colonial Athletic Association coach-of-the-year honors. ILLUSTRATION: [Color Photo]
