CAMPUS NOTES

Norfolk State University has selected four Norfolk residents to attend the Dozoretz National Institute for Minorities in Applied Sciences. Each has been awarded a four-year full academic scholarship of $50,000. Vera D. Roberts and Janelle Saulter, both of Booker T. Washington High School, will major in chemistry. Nequita Dowling of Maury High School will major in mathematics. Patrice Greene of Lake Taylor High School will major in computer science.

Norfolk residents Lenoa Walker, Donna H. Smith, Molly K. Brown and Maureen Fountain have been inducted into the Old Dominion University chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for nursing.

Dr. Page R. Laws, an associate professor of English and director of the Honors Program at Norfolk State University, was named the 1996 NSU Roy A. Woods Outstanding Teacher of the Year at the university's annual Spring Scholarship, Honors and Awards convocation.

The award recognizes a university faculty member, selected by a committee of peers, for qualities that best exemplify the characteristics of teaching, scholarship, research and community service at Norfolk State.

IN THE COMMUNITY

Mariya Ando of Norfolk, an eighth-grader at Norfolk Collegiate School, recently won the Music Teachers National Association Baldwin Junior High School Piano Competition at the association's national convention in Kansas City.

Mariya was the first Hampton Roads-area student to compete in the divisional and national level competition. Mariya, a piano student of Hobart Langrall, will perform at the Young Pianists' Showcase before the Virginia Symphony concert on May 24 at Chrysler Hall.

Dr. Willette L. LeHew of Norfolk has been elected rector of the Medical College of Hampton Roads Board of Visitors, the governing body of Eastern Virginia Medical School.

A member of the board since 1992, LeHew is a partner with The Group for Women. He has been a member of the EVMS community faculty since the medical school opened in 1973 and now serves as an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology. Joseph A. Leafe was elected to succeed LeHew as vice rector of the board. Madeline H. Sly, a longtime volunteer in many medical care causes in Hampton Roads and a member of the board of visitors since 1993, was re-elected secretary/treasurer.
