THE TIM REID Celebrity Weekend raised a gross total of $160,000 in four days of sporting events and star-gazing, announced officials at Norfolk State University.
After expenses are deducted, the weekend, on average, nets about $75,000, providing partial financial aid to about 30 students each school year, the NSU officials said.
Actor/director Tim Reid and his wife, actress Daphne Maxwell Reid, were joined by a parade of entertainers, including Angela Bassett, Al Freeman Jr., Anna Marie Horsford and Robert Guillaume.
The stars helped to raise about $20,000 during a gala and lively auction of more than 60 items, including cruises, airline tickets, art work and memorabilia autographed by professional athletes and entertainers.
One of the top bidders was boxing champion Pernell ``Sweetpea'' Whitaker, who contributed a total of $5,315 with bids on five items.
Funds also were donated by 27 local media and business sponsors, who contributed from $1,500 to $50,000. by CNB
