BITING IN MORNING, FISH TAKE AFTERNOON OFF

Pier fishing along the northern beaches was fairly good Wednesday morning but slow during the afternoon.

Some bluefish and sea mullet were landed during the morning on Kitty Hawk Pier. A few bluefish were taken from the end of the pier in the afternoon.

Avalon Pier reported a good early morning run of gray trout, with fish weighing as much as 2 pounds. Some blues and mullet also were taken. Fishing during the afternoon was slow.

Tailor blues, a few toadfish and some sea mullet were caught on Nags Head Pier on the incoming tide. Brad Bradley of Nags Head landed a nice 4-pound, 3-ounce speckled trout. A few sea mullet were decked during the afternoon.

Anglers on Outer Banks Pier caught a few croaker, keeper gray trout, big mullet and some 1- to 2-pound bluefish throughout the morning, but little action was reported later in the day.

On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier reported some nice sea mullet, gray trout and croaker taken during the morning. Fishing was slow in the afternoon, with only a few bottom fish and a 12-pound bluefish landed.

Avon Pier reported good fishing throughout the day. Plenty of small gray trout, sea mullet, toadfish, several nice flounder and a 27-inch drum were landed.

Some sea mullet and bluefish were taken off and on throughout the day at Frisco Pier.

Surfcasters from Corolla to Oregon Inlet caught some small bottom fish and a few trout. Tailor bluefish and small bottom fish were beached around the inlet.

Scattered mullet, small trout, flounder and bluefish were caught in the surf from Rodanthe to Buxton.

A few drum were landed Tuesday night at Cape Point. A run developed at high tide Wednesday, with a couple dozen big drum and some puppy drum taken. Some sea mullet were landed along the beach south of Cape Point.

One big bluefish, a few flounder and lots of small bluefish were caught from the surf at Hatteras Inlet Wednesday.

Limits of tuna were taken by many charters off Oregon Inlet. Several limits of dolphin also were reported, along with a few wahoo. The best of the action was between the 40480 and the 41580 Loran lines in 50 to 80 fathoms of water.

Scattered tuna, wahoo and a few dolphin were landed by the Hatteras charter fleet. The Tuna Duck released a sailfish and a spearfish.

The water temperature was 57.5 degrees Wednesday at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 68 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
