KEMPSVILLE BEATS F. COLONIAL 2-1

The Beach District boys soccer championship showdown is set.

Kempsville's 2-1 victory over First Colonial and Kellam's 6-0 trouncing of Bayside sets up a season-finale title match between the area's top two teams.

That game will be played at 7 p.m. Friday at Kellam.

``It's been a long time since the championship came down to the last game of the season,'' Kempsville coach Kevin Denson said. ``With as young a team as we have, we're especially happy to be in it.''

Wednesday's Kempsville-First Colonial clash was every bit the war it was forecast to be. There were a total of 30 fouls called and Kempsville was whistled for 22. Kempsville also got two yellow cards and Chiefs freshman Mike Greene was red carded for throwing a punch at game's end.

But even though his team got the best of the foul situation, First Colonial coach Joe Tucei was livid.

``The referees gave them this game,'' shouted Tucei, whose No. 3 Patriots dropped to 6-2 in the Beach and 11-3 overall. ``The penalty kick was no penalty and the hand ball at the end. . . . he knocked it back down to his feet and of course he's going to score. It's ridiculous.''

The calls Tucei questioned resulted in the two scores by top-ranked Kempsville (7-1, 11-1-1).

With 4:25 left in the first half, First Colonial's Paul Smartschan was called for tackling Joe Buchholz on a breakaway. Then Adam Schultz beat Corey Fogle to put Kempsville up 1-0.

First Colonial came back 12 minutes into the second half on a brilliant try by Nick Pantalo. After a pair of nice crossing passes failed to net any shots on goal, Pantalo fielded the ball about 35 yards to the right of the net. He booted a floating shot that just barely made it between the cross bar and the outstretched hands of Kempsville keeper Brian Richards.

But with 4:23 left in the game, the Chiefs won it when Buccholz chested down a pass from Schultz while streaking towards the goal. He then poked the ball easily past Fogle into the far right corner. by CNB
