PICK UP CAMPAIGN SIGNS

Virginia Beach is remiss in enforcing its regulations.

One need but look at the locations where political signs are placed to know that not all of them are on authorized spots.

A good friend who is very attuned to the political life of the city believes signs should be allowed on public rights-of-way because, as he stated it: ``It is the most-important thing to get the message out on.'' I agree with my friend, although I do not like to see the signs there days, weeks and, yes, months after the vote has been counted.

Therefore, City Council should enforce city regulations on the placing of political signs, or agree with my friend and delete the regulation.

Regardless of which course of action is taken, each registered candidate should be charged a litter fee so the city can afford to pick up abandoned signs.

In the interim, ``would-be'' public officeholders should place signs where they can pick them up soon after the vote is held.
